Multiculturalism is just one of the many reasons why Canada is touted as one of the best countries to live in the world. With one of the highest percentage of foreign-born citizens than any other G8 country, Canada is a melting pot nation.
Just walk down a busy street in Toronto or any other of Canada’s major cities and you’ll hear hundreds of different languages, dialects and accents being spoken, not to mention the vast amount of culinary dishes available to eat. The municipality of Scarborough is one of the many regions of the Greater Toronto Area’s that reflect this image. From humble beginnings as a group of small rural villages, Scarborough has become the home to several ethnic groups and destination for newly arrived immigrants.
To celebrate the diversity that Scarborough has to offer, Kinron Associates Event Services Management and Scarborough Residents Unite present the second annual Scarborough Community Multicultural Festival, a FREE three-day cultural event that will offer festival goers a chance to experience the food, music and entertainment that Scarborough has to offer. Hosted by “The Voice of T.O.” Kevin Carrington and MissGo2Girl, Tatiana King from G987FM’s The African Groove Show, the festival will run from August 5th to August 7th, 2016. It will also host a special citizenship ceremony, welcoming over 100 new Canadians and their families. In attendance at the ceremony will be important dignitaries including Hon. Jon Mckay, MP of Scarborough –Guildwood, Hon. Michael Coteau, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, Dr. Rita Cox, Order of Canada, His Worship, Mayor John Tory and other City of Toronto Councilors.
Performing at the festival will be award winning Trinidad and Tobagonian artist King Cosmos, world-class Jamaican-Canadian saxophonist Dave McLaugnlin, African beat drummer Lennon Glasgow, Yung Muse, Trinity, DJ Blackcat, DJ P Plus and more.
In a special personal message from the Premier of Ontario, Kathleen Wynne gave her best wishes for another successful year. “Our province is proud to be home to people from all corners of the globe. The community of Scarborough is one of the most popular destinations for newcomers, with many residents hailing from South Asia, East Asia, Africa and the Caribbean,” Wynne said. “Through their hard work, skills and community spirit, they have helped create the vibrant multicultural neighborhoods that Scarborough is known for.”
In a message from City of Toronto Mayor, John Tory thanked organizers for creating such an important and meaningful event.
“Community festivals encourage residents to have fun, participate in events and connect with each other. This year’s festival will feature educational activities, a job fair, cultural pageant and marketplace and live performances,” Tory said. “On behalf of the Toronto City Council, I thank organizers of todays festival and wish everyone much fun and a most enjoyable time.
