Ebony Toastmasters Celebrate 10 Years of Purpose, Learning and Leadership

BY MIGUEL MABILANGAN

On June 23rd, 2016 at the Harlem Underground, the Ebony Toastmasters Organization celebrated a night of festivities to honor their achievements, tenure and growth throughout this decade. Friends and well wishers attended to join and honor the Toastmasters and their contributions to the community.

The Ebony Toastmasters Club began in 2005 with seven members who met in the basement of a bookstore. After chartering in March 2006, the group has gone on to acquire nearly 150 members, and have helped all of them overcome their fear of public speaking, while at the same time, helped them improve upon their presentation skills.

Since 2007, Toastmasters have helped members win a multitude of awards. Several members have achieved great success at the Toastmasters International Area yearly. Their biggest success came recently, as member Assata Mckenzie won the Toastmasters District 60 Humorous Speech contest after competing and winning at the club, area and division levels, while Sandra Thompson won second place at the Impromptu District Speech contest.

The anniversary night was a well deserved celebration of proven success and everyone enjoyed a night of laughter, conversation and of course, speeches. The anniversary only fueled the organization to continue their good work and never lose sight of progression, evolution and education. This anniversary was extra special not only because of celebrating their tenth year, they also were recipients of the Presidents Distinguished Award from Toastmasters International, thus placing them in the top 10% of clubs in the GTA.

If you feel like you need help with your presentation skills, or are looking to overcome your public speaking anxieties, then you can visit their website at www.ebonytoastmasters.org, or contact Janali Davis- the VP of Public Relations and begin your membership today.
