Whether you’ve just purchased a new home, or are hoping to add a few more staple pieces to your living room, buying new furniture is a big decision. If you’re in the market for new furniture chances are that you’ll spend some time looking around, browsing different stores, scoping out the selection to choose something that looks great and fits the budget.

Self-employed, Guyanese business owner Jaikarran (Jai) Omroaw, owner of the Mattress & Furniture Emporium in Brampton is a salesman at heart. After immigrating to Canada a few years back, he made the decision to open his own business as a furniture retailer providing sturdy, long lasting and affordable furniture to his customers.

“The best thing about owning a business is being your own boss,” he shares proudly of his one-man show, and the ability to offer his customers quality products and great service. “Customer service is my first priority in this business, and as an independent retailer it gives me the freedom to really get to know and understand my customer’s needs.”

Jai is a straightforward, stand-up guy, hoping to offer his customers the best experience each time they visit his store. Most times people venture into a furniture store they have some idea of what they want, they know how much they’re willing to spend, however, it’s not until they choose a particular piece that it sparks a conversation. “If you come here looking for a bed, I’m going to show you my selection of bed frames and mattresses, provide you with all the information so that you can make the best-informed decision of your purchase,” Jai explains.

“As a furniture store, I know that I have a lot of competition, but that doesn’t bother me,” Jai says, “What’s most important to me is the personal experience of each person that walks into my store, regardless if they buy anything or not.”

Upon initial entrance into the Mattress & Furniture Emporium, customers are invited into a large and spacious showroom, showcasing many different floor models that are for sale, and access to various catalogs showcasing more furniture items to be ordered and shipped from the distributor. Many of the companies they work with are local and offer a fine selection of modern quality furniture items made of solid wood and durable materials.

“When a customer walks into my store, I don’t immediately acknowledge them, and press them for their business.” shares Jai. “I give them the opportunity to look around, browse and see what they like, if something jumps out at them, they’ll inquire about it.”

Jai likes to understand his customers on a personal level, for him relationships with his customers come first and business is second. He enjoys hearing what people have to say, sharing their stories and relating to them as regular people. “I’ve been around for many years, and that is because of the way I run my business,” Jai says. “When I meet a customer, if they purchase furniture from me, I want them to be able to come back again whenever they are in need of other things.”

People tend to lean towards purchasing from well-known brand name stores because they feel like they probably offer better quality items, however, this isn’t the case. “People should come here, because I carry the same quality furniture, at a more affordable price,” Jai says. Buying from a smaller furniture retailer is more beneficial to customers because it is easier to get what you want, and stay within your budget. In bigger stores, there are a lot more factors that influence the price you see on the tag.
