Reckless spring break behaviour adds to an existing STD crisis

Spring break may have wrapped up back in March; however, some of those who partook in risky behaviour during that time will have to learn the hard way that engaging in such risky behaviour has consequences that are very real and potentially life-altering.

We all know spring break is a time for post-secondary students to take a break from their studies and relax. While on break, some students will flock to places in Florida, such as Miami, Daytona Beach, Fort Lauderdale, or, recently, Houston, Texas, to enjoy the warm weather and participate in fun excursions.

Throughout the decades, spring breakers began to develop a bad reputation due to a handful of people who would partake in reckless behaviour and/or illegal activities. This includes excessive drinking, drug use, public intoxication, operating a vehicle like a car or jet ski, or just being negligent while under the influence, overcrowding in areas, violating public safety rules and not taking any precautions while engaging in sexual activities with strangers.

Usually, the motive for this type of behaviour stems from people wanting a temporary escape from normal rules, routines, and responsibilities. However, there is a fine line between what is okay and what is risky.

The outcome of engaging in reckless activities is not something to take lightly. People have either been seriously injured, lost their lives, faced legal consequences, or have missed educational and/or employment opportunities because of their poor choices.

Spring break 2026 might be an unforgettable one, but for the wrong reasons, because of what has transpired. In 2026, Houston emerged as a popular spring break hot spot. TikTok trends, the Houston Livestock and Rodeo, a 12% to 15% increase in hotel bookings, and, of course, the warm weather, were the driving forces behind Houston becoming a popular tourist destination for spring breakers.

While this surge may have been lucrative for the economy, local restaurants, the nightlife, and events in the Houston area, it came at a cost as the notorious spring break behaviour came right along with it.

Hookup culture has been a concern in recent years across the globe. There has been an alarming increase in tourists engaging in sexual activities with strangers while they were on vacation in Houston for spring break. This led to the emergence of the viral trend known as the “First Day in Houston” trend. The concept of the trend involves people filming and posting themselves, or other people in bed next to a stranger they had a one-night stand with on their first day in Houston, while on spring break. The trend stirred up controversy as it is deemed an invasion of privacy and highlights how careless some can be when it comes to sex.

Although recording someone without their consent or knowledge, especially if it is a private moment, is something I would never condone doing, having casual sex with a stranger, especially, is highly dangerous. Even if protection is being used, people still need to be careful, because condoms can break, and Plan B may not work if it’s not taken within three days after unprotected sex.

There is no denying that Houston is gaining traction as a popular spring break destination. However, one thing people should note is that Houston has become an STD hotspot in recent years with rates of HIV, syphilis and gonorrhoea that are exceeding the average in Texas.

The result of people hooking up in Houston during spring break has led to an estimated 42,000 people testing positive for an STD. While some may have caught an STD that can be cured, others have caught a treatable STD, but they will have to live with it for the rest of their lives and face the serious potential health issues that come with it.

I am all for people wanting to have a memorable and stress-free spring break. However, people need to respect themselves and understand that one night of passion is not worth living a lifetime of pain.
