Community Comes Together to Honour 188 Years of Indian Arrival Day Ahead of Markham Heritage Celebration

The Indo-Caribbean community in Ontario recently gathered for a powerful celebration of heritage and remembrance. The 2nd Annual 5K Run and Walkathon marked another successful year of growth, setting the stage for the upcoming 28th Annual Caribbean Indian Heritage Event on Saturday, May 23rd, at the Vedic Cultural Centre in Markham.

Held to commemorate 188 years since Indian arrival in the Caribbean, the walkathon brought families, youth, and seniors together to honour the resilience and contributions of ancestors who first arrived in the West Indies in 1838.

What began as a modest initiative has quickly grown. Sanjay Kumar, Chair of the 5K Run and Walkathon, noted that the inaugural event welcomed 130 participants and raised $2,000. This year, momentum accelerated with nearly 200 attendees and fundraising efforts surpassing $5,000—a clear reflection of the community’s commitment to preserving Indo-Caribbean heritage.

A Legacy of Culture and Preservation

The walkathon serves as a vibrant kickoff to the 28th Annual Heritage Program, a long-standing cultural celebration presented by the Toronto Arya Samaj (TAS) and the Vedic Cultural Centre in Markham. Located at 4345 14th Avenue, the Centre has long served as an important spiritual and cultural hub for the diaspora.

Over the last few years, a growing number of leaders and creatives from the wider Indo-Caribbean community have rallied behind TAS to ensure these vital cultural traditions are passed down. This year’s program highlights history through education, live performances, youth involvement, and intergenerational storytelling.

Passing the Torch to the Next Generation

“Events such as the 5K Run and Walkathon and the annual Heritage and Cultural Program play a vital role in strengthening cultural pride and community unity,” said Varun Kumar, Chair of the commemoration committee.

Incoming TAS President, Indeera Prashad, expressed excitement for this year’s lineup, noting it provides a bridge for younger generations to understand their roots while allowing elders to see their legacy securely carried forward. Combined with stronger community ties and collaboration in York Region, this year’s commemoration stands as a testament to the enduring strength of faith, family, and heritage.
