Influencer fatigue: Why people are sick and tired of influencers

“People are looking for the authenticity that made them follow in the first place.”

Over the years, people with social media have loved to rush to buy the newest products promoted by influencers and were intrigued with their luxury hauls that we couldn’t even afford to dream about. However, as we are entering 2026 there’s been a rise of “Influencer fatigue.” In this article, I’ll be discussing why people are feeling this way.

First, people are ironically being influenced by influencers because they feel that particular influencer has become out of touch with all the sponsored/advertised posts that sometimes aren’t disclosed, the over glorified luxury hauls, and overall, the difference between how the influencer and followers are living are like night and day and people feel truly disconnected from them and how they started out on social media.

Furthermore, I wanted to discuss a situation that has happened on social media that was named “Lashgate.” This was a situation where the influencer Mikayla Nogueira was doing a sponsored post for the brand L’Oréal, on their L’Oréal Telescopic Lift mascara, and she claimed that it gave her a false lash effect. Then, she tries it on to compare it to the other side of her face, and it looks like she has lashes, and people in the comments were able to pinpoint the brand of lashes as well. These types of situations cause distrust and are unnecessary because the original mascara already looked good without adding the lashes.

In the end, “influencer fatigue” comes down to people getting tired of the nonsense. Followers are done with fake reviews, undisclosed ads, and influencers who act out of touch with reality. What people want now is honesty, not staged perfection, or sneaky marketing tactics. If influencers can’t provide that, it’s no surprise to see more and more viewers choosing to tune them out.
