Is striving for the material world worth it?

BY KAHA G. – 15 YEARS OLD

As individuals, we want to live a comfortable life. That’s standard, that’s fine. However, I have been seeing an increase in people wanting a full-out lavish lifestyle. I’m not against it, but we have to ponder if it’s for the right reasons, and if we are going to use it beneficially.

People would sacrifice their happiness, their mental health, and their lives just to get a job that makes them filthy rich. My question to you is, does money always equate to happiness? Will the material world give you the satisfaction you need? Is chasing this life going to guarantee you happiness in the next? What is happiness?

We can get the latest: shoes, cars, clothes, watches, jewelry, supplies, homes, and whatnot. You can get every single luxury ever known to man. All the diamonds, emeralds, and gold. After you have it all, What’s next? What else could you chase? What else is there to feed your uncontrollable desires?

The reality of the material world is that it is useless. We need money to survive, but it is not the meaning of life. Our purpose is not to chase a losing battle. Be grateful for the wealth you have, and at the same time don’t wish for more to the point where it’s eating you alive. The people claiming, they want to be filthy rich are the people who are living comfortably, while in other places in the world, people are barely surviving.

Take time for yourself to learn the true meaning of life, be a good person to yourself and others, and find out why we were truly put here. Like Jim Carrey said, “I hope everybody could get rich and famous and will have everything they dreamed of so that they know it’s not the answer.”
