What you mock could one day be your reality

Editor’s Note: The specific dates and names in this piece have moved along since we first hit publish. But the core story? The core story is completely relevant. Think of this as a look back at how the situation started.

Navigating through a breakup is not always easy. The healing journey is like a roller coaster. One day, you are up, the next day, you are down. So, to kick someone when they are down will do nothing but cause more pain for them and eventually for yourself.

On April 25th, 2026, rapper Megan Thee Stallion announced on Instagram Story that she and NBA basketball player Klay Thompson were no longer together after nine months of dating due to Thompson allegedly cheating.

“Cheating, had me around your whole family playing house … got “cold feet.” Holding you down through all your HORRIBLE mood swings and treatment towards me during your basketball season now you don’t know if you can be ‘monogamous, ???  B**** I need a REAL break after this one .. bye yall,” said Megan in her Instagram Story post.

Megan later confirmed in a statement to Billboard and Complex that the two went their separate ways and she would focus on herself for the time being.

“I have made the decision to end my relationship with Klay. Trust, fidelity, and respect are non-negotiable for me in a relationship, and when those values are compromised, there is no real path forward. I am taking this time to prioritize myself and move ahead with peace and clarity,” said Megan in her statement.

The news blindsided many, myself included, because Megan raved about Thompson and referred to him as the nicest person, she has ever met when the former pair made their red-carpet debut as a couple at the Pete and Thomas Foundation Gala a week after they soft-launched their relationship.

While some people showed support for Megan and condemned Thompson, referring to him as the world’s biggest fumbler, others have shown a lack of empathy towards Megan.

Instead of being compassionate and understanding that someone is hurting and going through a healing journey, some men took this as an opportunity to mock Megan’s breakup with Thompson, along with making degrading posts and comments about her dating history.

People did not hesitate to make distasteful assumptions about the relationship ending, either due to Megan’s dating history, assuming that she cannot be taken seriously as a life partner or that she is not “classy enough” because of the content of some of her songs.

Considering that it became known that Thompson has a history of allegedly being unfaithful towards past ex-girlfriends, it seems like people are pointing fingers at the wrong person. Not only that, but overall, the comments made towards Megan are uncalled for and disrespectful.

Megan thought she was finally beginning to have it good when it came to her love life with Thompson, only to find out that the relationship was not what she thought it was. She must wrap her head around that as she proceeds to heal and move on with her life.

One thing about life is that the tables are always turning. No one is untouchable because anything can happen to anyone. Sometimes, laughing is catching. The very same thing that you mock could one day become your reality. While some can navigate through a breakup easily, many cannot. The pain that comes with that is not something to mock. For anyone who thinks a heartbreak is a laughing matter, you will not be laughing when you are experiencing a roller coaster of emotions as you heal from one.

We all deserve to have that special person in our lives who values us. So, it is heartbreaking when a relationship does not work out and should not be looked at as a laughing matter.
